Regional Development and Public Works Minister Nikolay Naydenov has sent a letter to the European Commission proposing an increase in the total amount of state aid for the transport sector from EUR 25,564,594.06 to EUR 50,000,000, the Ministry said.
The Regional Development Ministry has developed a state aid scheme of support for covering costs to maintain the competitiveness of heavy goods road transport in Bulgaria. The aid will be administered by the Road Infrastructure Agency.
The geopolitical instability in the Middle East that began on February 28 has led to a sharp increase in energy commodity prices on global markets, particularly diesel, on which Bulgaria's transport sector is heavily dependent, the Ministry said. It noted that these developments triggered an immediate and exceptionally strong shock to global energy supplies, resulting in unprecedented volatility and a steep rise in energy prices.
The aim of this measure is to address the liquidity shortages faced by companies directly or indirectly affected by the serious economic disruptions. This is crucial for maintaining economic stability and preventing potential negative impacts on the Bulgarian economy as a whole, the Ministry said.
The Council of Ministers decided on December 30, 2025 that the Road Infrastructure Agency will develop a state aid scheme to support the competitiveness of Bulgaria's heavy goods road transport. The one-off aid was to amount to up to BGN 50 million, or EUR 25,564,594.06.
