A discussion forum on the security and risks in hospitality was held at the main conference hall of the University of National and World Economy on Friday, bringing together representatives from public institutions, the business sector, and academia. The event was opened by Tourism Deputy Minister Pavlin Petrov, who emphasized that security is a key factor for the sustainable development of the tourism industry.

During the forum, participants examined the main risks facing the sector.

Vladimir Nikov from the Association of Hoteliers and Restaurateurs – Velingrad and the Western Rhodopes explained that crises tend to arise suddenly, often in conditions of limited information, and require rapid response. He classified them into external risks such as natural, health-related, and geopolitical crises, and internal ones, including fires, guest incidents, management errors, and data-related risks.

The role of tour operators was addressed by Petar Stoyanov, Chair of the Board of the Association of Bulgarian Tour Operators and Travel Agents (ABTTA). He pointed out that tour operators act as the link between the end customer and the tourism product, placing them at the centre of numerous risks and potential misunderstandings. According to him, although regulations and legal frameworks are clearly defined, gaps in their practical implementation are frequently observed, leading to tension and customer dissatisfaction.

Fire safety expert Emil Dinev highlighted the need for a systematic approach to safety in hotels. He explained that modern buildings are designed with both active and passive fire protection measures that help contain fires and support safe evacuation. He stressed the importance of staff training, clear procedures, and designated assembly points during evacuations.

The organizers explained that the aim of the forum was not only to identify existing challenges but also to propose practical solutions and encourage the exchange of best practices among experts.

The event concluded with a call for closer cooperation between institutions, businesses, and the academic community to enhance both the security and competitiveness of Bulgaria’s tourism sector.
