The Kyustendil District Prosecutor’s Office has opened a pre-trial investigation into suspected pollution of the Struma River that could pose a danger to animals and plants, the Sofia Appellate Prosecutor’s Office said on Friday.
The investigation follows a report of pollution in the river in Kyustendil Municipality, as а dead fish was found in the Struma near the villages of Girchevtsi and Tarnovlag on September 3.
Investigators conducted an inspection and collected water and fish samples for laboratory and expert analysis, as prosecutors are seeking to establish the cause of the fish deaths, the presence and nature of any pollution, its potential source and those who may be responsible.
Further investigative action will be considered once the test results are available.
