Addressing Bulgaria's Parliament Thursday in a declaration on behalf of MRF-New Beginning, occasioned by the end of the legislature's life, Deputy Floor Leader Jordan Tzonev said that the 51st National Assembly is ending its term at the will of less than 10% of Bulgarian voters who took part in protests.
He was referring to large-scale anti-government demonstrations held in Sofia and most regional capitals on December 1, 2025, followed by another wave of mass protests on December 10, which led to the resignation of Rosen Zhelyazkov's cabinet, which had been formed on the mandate of GERB-UDF. A caretaker cabinet headed by Andrey Gurov was appointed, and early parliamentary elections will be held on April 19, 2026.
Tzonev said that the legislature also stepping down at the will of the mandate holder, which heeded the demands of those less than 10%, is not the main issue. He pointed out that the key problem lies in the mechanism that has driven Bulgaria into a political crisis for the past five to six years.
"This is the same mechanism that networks of influence linked to George Soros can deploy when they are not in power, when they are dissatisfied with the allocation of resources to their NGOs, or with their participation in governance," the Deputy Floor Leader argued. He added that such networks are capable of organizing protests through social media, the conventional media and other means, leading to government resignations and prolonged political crises.
"These networks of influence, which the Movement for Rights and Freedoms has opposed for years, trigger political crises not in the interest of democracy, nation states, or the alliances to which Bulgaria belongs, but in private interests, those of Soros, his network, NGOs, and proxy political structures created and represented by them," Tzonev further said.
He called for a review of the past five years, arguing that the ongoing crisis, marked by parliaments and governments as short lived as nine months, has resulted from the actions of such influence networks, and asked what Bulgaria, its businesses, and its people have lost as a consequence.
