Bulgaria's outgoing President Rumen Radev has received a letter from U.S. President Donald Trump extending an invitation for Bulgaria to join the founding countries of the Peace Council initiated by the American president, with President Radev proposed as Bulgaria’s representative in the future international organization, said here on Wednesday the Bulgarian head of State's press secretariat.
According to the statement, the establishment of the Peace Council at President Trump’s initiative aims to promote international cooperation in achieving a peaceful resolution to military conflicts in Gaza and other regions.
In his reply to the U.S. President, the Bulgarian head of State underscored the importance of Trump’s peace initiatives for the de-escalation of a number of military conflicts. Radev expressed hope that the support provided by Donald Trump for the role of diplomacy would lead to the achievement of sustainable peace solutions in Gaza and globally. President Radev also highlighted the recognition of Bulgarian diplomacy through the appointment of a Bulgarian diplomat as High Representative for Gaza within the Peace Council, the press secretariat added.
The press secretariat further noted that in his response, the Bulgarian head of State also reviewed the current political situation in Bulgaria, marked by resignations submitted by the government following mass protests across the country, as well as his own resignation from the presidential office in order to engage directly in restoring statehood in Bulgaria, strengthening the rule of law, and rebuilding dialogue between institutions and citizens. Rumen Radev expressed his expectation that in the near future Bulgaria would have the necessary stable institutional environment to continue fruitful cooperation with the United States in the interest of joint efforts to preserve peace and security.
The White House has begun forming the so-called Peace Council for Gaza, and over the past few days the names of the body’s leaders have been announced, along with invitations sent to a number of countries to join the new organization. The White House announced last week that Bulgarian diplomat Nickolay Mladenov would serve as High Representative for Gaza. Members of the board include U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, World Bank President Ajay Banga, among others.
