On December 15, Bulgaria participated in an Open Debate of the UN Security Council on “Leadership for Peace,” dedicated to the upcoming selection of the UN Secretary-General and the strengthening of multilateralism.
In her statement, Ambassador Gergana Karadjova, Permanent Representative of Bulgaria to the UN, stressed the high responsibility of UN member states in the process of selecting the Secretary-General. She called for the nomination of candidates who meet the highest standards of political and moral integrity, have a clear and bold vision for international cooperation, and demonstrate the determination to bring issues before the Security Council that may pose a threat to international peace and security.
Ambassador Karadjova highlighted that these qualities are possessed by both men and women and encouraged the nomination of female candidates, expressing the expectation that they would be taken very seriously in the upcoming selection process. She also noted that, to date, among the UN’s five regional groups, only the Eastern European Group has never had a member serve as UN Secretary-General.
The debate is one of the key events of Slovenia’s Security Council presidency in December and follows a ministerial-level debate on the same topic organized by Slovenia in September 2024.
