Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Assoc. Prof. Stoyan Andonov has passed away at the age of 65, the ministry's press centre said on Wednesday.

“Prof. Andonov was a dignified man and a dedicated professional who made a significant and lasting contribution to the history of sport in Bulgaria”, the press release added. He was an associate professor in the Water Sports Department at the Vasil Levski National Sports Academy, a swimming master, and a world champion in water rescue.

From 1993 to 2006, Andonov headed the Water Rescue Service of the Bulgarian Red Cross. From 1983 to 1985, he was a swimming coach at the National Sports Academy. As head coach of the men's national lifesaving team from 1987 to 1991, he led Bulgaria to victory in the European Championships in 1988.

From 2018 to 2021, Andonov served as Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, and in April 2024, he was reappointed to the same position. His scientific interests and publications related to the development of swimming and water rescue — areas in which he was a recognized expert and an inspiration to generations of athletes, coaches and teachers.

"We express our sincere condolences to his family, colleagues, students, and loved ones," said the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

The funeral service will be held on November 7 at 13:00 hrs at the St Sophia Church in Sofia.
