Victims of domestic violence should know that there is someone to support them, Justice Minister Georgi Georgiev stated in Ruse on Friday. He was speaking at the opening of a regional counseling centre for victims of domestic violence in the Danube city. He noted that this is the latest regional counseling centre opened in the country, as one opened in Burgas already, while the next one will open in Dobrich soon.
The minister specified that there were over 1,400 reports of domestic violence in Ruse Region in 2024, and by mid-2025, there will be another 600. "This trend must decrease. Victims must know that they have immediate and free psychological support from the state and that there is a place to be accommodated through regional crisis centres, as well as free legal support," he emphasized, adding that children without parents, affected by discrimination, can also benefit from this free legal assistance, which is also thanks to the increased funding from the state by nearly 50% in this direction.
He emphasized that the regional counseling centres provide free legal assistance in various cases for citizens living below the poverty line. Georgiev pointed out that in cases of domestic violence, the poverty threshold requirement is practically not applied when the victim of domestic violence fills out a declaration in which he states that he does not have access to his funds.
