site.btaSofia Will Save EUR 81 Million Under New Waste Collection Contract, Says Mayor

Sofia Municipality will save more than EUR 81 million over the next five years after signing a new waste collection and disposal contract for Zone 3, consisting of the Slatina, Poduyane, and Izgrev boroughs, Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev said on Friday.

He pointed out that the new deal will save more than EUR 12 million on waste collection alone, adding that accepting the original bids would have cost the city over EUR 220 million more. The mayor also noted that the new contractor has taken over operations with full staff and equipment under municipal supervision. Terziev thanked residents for their patience during the transition and volunteers who helped clean affected areas, stating that contracts for six additional boroughs are expected to be signed soon.

On Thursday, Sofia Deputy Mayor Nikolay Nedelkov announced that the company "Clean Sofia" DZZD will fully take over the activities of waste collection, waste transportation and cleaning in Zone 3. "There are two months for mobilization to carry out all activities. The Sofia Inspectorate will strictly monitor the activities and everything necessary will be done for the company to fulfill its obligations under the contract," he emphasized, adding that the company will face sanctions if the obligations are not fulfilled.

Since the start of 2026, the Sofia Inspectorate has imposed more than EUR 300,000 in fines on waste management companies.
