site.btaUPDATED Interior Minister: Kardzhali Mayor Questioned over Public Procurement Probe

The questioning of Kardzhali Mayor and Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) Deputy Chair Erol Emin Mumun is linked to an investigation into alleged misconduct in office related to a public procurement procedure, Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev said in Veliko Tarnovo on Thursday.

Demerdzhiev pointed out that the procurement contract was of significant value, and investigators have gathered evidence suggesting that influence may have been exerted in the selection of the contractor. He also alleged that not all activities envisaged under the contract had been completed.

Mumun was taken in for questioning at the Regional Directorate of the Interior Ministry in Kardzhali. 

If the Mayor has not committed a crime or any violation, there is no reason to worry, the Minister stated. "We clearly promised that the laws (...) will be applied strictly and equally to everyone. There will be no territories where different legislation will operate, nor will there be people who are above the law. So nothing unusual is happening," Demerdzhiev concluded.
