site.btaSofia2Go: Sofia's New App-Based Public Transport Cards
Sofia Municipality and the Centre for Urban Mobility Wednesday presented the new Sofia2Go mobile app, which integrates public transport cards in Sofia into a phone’s digital wallet via Google Wallet. The service enables travel without a physical card and was developed with Google and NXP.
Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev emphasized that Sofia is among the pioneers in integrating transport documents into digital wallets, making travel more convenient for hundreds of thousands of residents. He noted that the city’s long-term goal is a modern, well-functioning transport system that encourages people to reduce car use, supported by digitalization, fleet upgrades, better working conditions, staffing, and infrastructure improvements.
Centre for Urban Mobility CEO Rumyana Milova described Sofia2Go as another step in the city’s mobility digital transformation and highlighted that the centre already manages public transport and parking while expanding digital services, including unified ticketing and contactless bank card payments, placing Sofia among leading European cities in modern transit solutions. She added that their systems process over 1 million validations daily, reflecting both scale and user demand.
Through Sofia2Go, users can load transport cards for themselves or family members, though preferential cards for children under 14 and similar categories still require document verification. Milova nevertheless pointed out that the system meets high international security standards, thanking Google and NXP for their partnership.
Sofia will host the 2026 Men's European Volleyball Championship from September 9 to 26, with officials noting that the new service is expected to ease mobility for international guests while reinforcing the city’s modern image.
