Botevgrad is not only a good place to live and a symbol of hospitality, but also an example of a successful municipality that looks confidently to the future, President Rumen Radev said here on Saturday. He attended a ceremony marking 148 years since Botevgrad's liberation from Ottoman rule and 160 years since it was proclaimed a town.

He noted that years of chronic political crisis and the State’s neglect of the needs of smaller towns have posed serious challenges for local authorities.

The head of State praised the efforts of Mayor Ivan Gavalyugov, the municipal leadership, and all the people of Botevgrad "who work tirelessly for their hometown and continually seek opportunities to develop it as a modern municipality that provides everything needed for a comfortable and secure life, as well as for the successful professional development of young people." Radev pointed to the city’s decent social services, notable cultural life, and excellent conditions for both mass and professional sports.

Radev added that November 29 is a pivotal date for Botevgrad. "It is a watershed marking the beginning of a new era. Day one of the long-awaited arrival of freedom," he noted. The President recalled that 148 years have passed since the fateful events in the Orhanie (present-day Botevgrad) area, where the victorious course of the Russo-Turkish War was determined. Today, Botevgrad offers much more than an inspiring encounter with history and tradition, he said.
