Coalition Forthenature.org urged the government of Bulgaria to advocate to the EU not to allow the removal of regulations protecting European citizens from the uncontrolled spread of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in nature and food. The Coalition's letter was sent to Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov, Minister of Agriculture and Food Kiril Vatev, Minister of Environment and Water Julian Popov and the Director of the Risk Assessment Center of Food Chain, Koycho Koev, as well as to the media.

The letter reads that for the first time since 2015 after the entry into force of the GMO ACT, "without public consultation and against the will of nearly 90% of Bulgarians, the Bulgarian government plans to support the destruction of Bulgarian agriculture, the livelihoods of small producers, biodiversity and the right to food choice".

Forthenature.org urges the Bulgarian government to resist the external pressure and the urgent deadlines it faces to support the removal of regulations on the new generation of genetically modified plants - new GMOs or so-called New Genomic Techniques (NGTs).

The letter reiterates that the ban on GMOs in the country was the result of a public campaign here.

On July 5, 2023, the European Commission published its legislative proposal to remove regulations on the new generation of genetically modified plants.
