A variety of events will be held at Toplocentrala in Sofia’s South Park II on September 30 as part of Nature Fest. The festival is organized by the For the Nature coalition of environmental organizations in Bulgaria to celebrate the beauty of nature and the need to preserve it as well as to mark the 31st anniversary of EuroBirdwatch.

EuroBirdwatch is an annual campaign of BirdLife International raising awareness for migratory birds and their habitats. It is held in late September - early October as that is the period of the year when millions of migratory birds leave Europe and head south to their wintering locations. Last year, some 45,000 bird-watching events were held by 33 BirdLife partner organizations in Europe and Central Asia.

On the programme of Nature Fest are bird-watching walks to meet the feathery residents of Sofia under the guidance of experts from the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds. The organization said it has also prepared a presentation for children between 8 and 12 years of age on its Eco Adventurers educational programme, created under the Green Belt of Southeast Bulgaria project.

Visitors will learn more about camera traps and what animals have been caught on them in the last months as well as about sustainable fashion. Games and workshops are also on the programme. A debate will be held where citizens, experts, and political figures will discuss and compare their priorities for Bulgaria’s green laws. In the evening, an award ceremony will be held for the annual biodiversity and climate awards for 2023, the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation said.

Nature Fest is part of the We Give Nature a Voice project aimed at popularizing the joint efforts of the For the Nature coalition of environmental organizations to preserve Bulgaria’s natural treasure. The project is implemented by the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation in partnership with Green Balkans and with the financial support of Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway under the Active Citizens Fund in Bulgaria within the EEA Financial Mechanism.
