The Bulgarian Woman of the Year – St. Zlata of Meglen 2024 Award is a heartfelt expression of gratitude not only to this year’s laureate, but also to all twenty nominees and, symbolically, to every Bulgarian woman around the world, Executive Director of the State Agency for Bulgarians Abroad Raina Mandzhukova said at the official award ceremony in Sofia’s University of National and World Economy on Wednesday.
Mandzhukova recalled that the award was established by herself and Prof. Plamen Pavlov to honour the courage and sacrifice of two compatriots – Spaska Mitrova and Kostadinka Kuneva. “Since it began with a powerful message, the award continues to remind us that Bulgaria remembers and values the efforts of our compatriots abroad,” she said.
Mandzhukova voiced gratitude to all former heads of the Agency who have preserved the tradition. Nearly 90% of Bulgarian organizations worldwide are founded and led by women, Mandzhukova said, highlighting their vital contribution.
In 2025, for the first time, a nominee came from the Baltic region, and a record number of nominees attended the ceremony, she added in conclusion.
