The film Made in EU by Bulgarian director Stephan Komandarev is having its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on Sunday, August 31, the festival’s website reports. The film is part of the Spotlight section.

This segment of the festival features eight works from various genres, with a focus on cinematic innovation, creative originality, and strong audience potential, according to the team behind the Bulgarian production. Each film will be screened at Sala Giardino, accompanied by public meetings and discussions with directors, actors, and figures from the arts and culture world. Viewers will be invited to vote for the Armani Beauty Audience Award.

The first two screenings of Made in EU take place on Sunday. Komandarev’s production will also be shown on Monday, September 1, according to the official schedule on the Venice Film Festival website.

The movie tells the story of a seamstress in a small town and her son. Iva is accused of being the cause of a pandemic outbreak in the community and becomes a scapegoat, persecuted by a system that has profited from her labour for years. The film was shot in the southern Bulgarian towns of Haskovo, Dimitrovgrad, Madan, and Rudozem. The cast includes Gergana Pletnyova, Todor Kotsev, Gerasim “Gero” Georgiev, Ivaylo Hristov, Ivan Barnev, Anastasiya Ingilizova, and Ovanes Torosyan.

In Bulgaria, Made in EU will open the Kinomania Film Festival at Hall 1 of Sofia’s National Palace of Culture (NDK) on November 13, and will be released in cinemas nationwide on November 21.

The Venice International Film Festival, one of the most prestigious in Europe, began on August 27 and runs through to September 6.
