An exhibition marking the 100th birth anniversary of Bulgarian artist Georgi Baev opened at the Bulgarian Cultural Institute (BCI) in Berlin on Tuesday, the BCI said on Facebook. The exhibition features paintings from various periods of Baev's career owned by the Petko Zadgorski Art Gallery of Burgas.
At the opening, BCI Director Borislav Petranov said that the exhibition had been organized in support of Burgas’s bid for European Capital of Culture in 2032.
The guests were addressed by the Ambassador of Bulgaria to Germany, Grigor Porozhanov, and the exhibition curator Lyudmila Kutieva.
A bilingual album has been published to accompany the exhibition, featuring works from both the artist’s family collection and the Petko Zadgorski Art Gallery in Burgas, the Institute added.
Georgi Baev was born on November 9, 1924, in the Black Sea city of Burgas and graduated from the Academy of Arts in Sofia in 1950 with a degree in painting. His works are featured in nearly all major Bulgarian galleries, as well as in the collections of the State Hermitage Museum, the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, and the Chicago Museum. His artworks can also be found in private collections across London, Paris, Zurich, Hamburg, Vienna, Tokyo, New York, and Philadelphia, to name but a few. The artist passed away on February 18, 2007, in Burgas.
