Bulgarian Cultural Institute (BCI) in Berlin hosts concert by the Eastern Passage Doykin-Karparov Quartet (Asen Doykin – piano, Vladimir Karparov – saxophone, Igor Spallati – double bass, Peter Somos – drums), the Cultural Institute said on Friday.

The Eastern Passage Quartet was founded in 2017 and performs at some of the most renowned jazz clubs in Berlin, as well as at Bulgarian jazz festivals and events. Their music blends Bulgarian rhythms and melodies with the jazz idiom tradition. On May 9, the quartet will present pieces from their debut album, as well as new compositions.

Asen Doykin has been part of the New York jazz scene for over twenty-five years. A highly versatile musician, he has worked with some of the most renowned jazz artists from both the New York and international scenes, including Pino Palladino, Joe Locke, Keith Carlock, Tim Lefebvre, Bennie Maupin, Kendrick Scott, among many others. 

Vladimir Karparov is a musician and composer, blending contemporary jazz with Bulgarian folk music who released several solo albums. In 2020, he received an award from Bulgaria’s Ministry of Culture for promoting Bulgarian culture worldwide.

Igor Spallati was born in Perugia, Italy, and after completing his classical double bass studies in Italy, he moved to Berlin, where he continued his education at the prestigious Jazz-Institut Berlin. A versatile musician experienced in various musical styles, Igor Spallati has performed across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. 

Peter Somos, who grew up in Budapest graduated summa cum laude from Codarts University of Music in Rotterdam. Over the years, he has worked and performed with artists such as Casey Benjamin, Mahesh Vinayakram, Nadishana, Shari Williams, Besh o droM, Krzysztof Scieranski, among others.
