Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) Director General Kiril Valchev briefed Bulgarian Consul General to Toronto Velislava Panova of the possibility to submit news to BTA’s BG World rubric for the Bulgarian community in Canada. The two visited the two Bulgarian schools in the area of Toronto with their principals Stamena-Stela Dimova of the Kaneff Sunday School and Maya Vassileva of the Rodolubche Sunday School.
Valchev briefed them of access to Bulgarian news after BTA services became freely available following changes to the BTA Act in 2021.
BTA Director General Valchev visited two of the three branches of the Kaneff Sunday School in Brampton and Mississauga. According to Stamena-Stela Dimova 11 teachers educate 150 children in the three branches. In 2024 the school will mark its tenth anniversary.
Also, Valchev visited the pre-school of Rodolubche in Etobicoke. According to prinicpal Maya Vassileva six teachers educate 150 children, of whom 50 remotely.
Bulgaria’s Consulate General in Toronto services nine of the ten provinces and three territories of Canada and mobile consular services are of great help to Bulgarians in Canada, which with a territory of nearly 1 million sq.km is the second largest in the world, said Panova. At the Consulate General she received a medal, issued by the mint of the Bulgarian National Bank on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of BTA’s first news bulletin.
Valchev and Panova visited three of the four Bulgarian churches in the area of Toronto – Sts Cyril and Methodius, St George and Saint Dimitar.
Within the framework of a visit to Canada to attend the conference of MINDS International Valchev will meet with representatives of the Bulgarian communities in Montreal and Ottawa to acquaint them with the BG World rubric and free access to the BTA services.
In 2023, nearly 100,000 Bulgarians live in Canada. The largest Bulgarian community is in Toronto in the province of Ontario, where some 60,000 Bulgarians live, according to 2017 data.
