The Bulgarian community in Moldova celebrated the 115th anniversary of the declaration of Bulgaria's independence with a wreath-laying ceremony at the monument of Bulgarian volunteers in Chisinau on Thursday.

The event was attended by representatives of the Bulgarian Embassy in Moldova, headed by Ambassador Maya Dobreva, Bulgarian organizations in Chisinau, the leadership of the Taraclia region, politicians and citizens.

First Secretary and Head of the Political Section at the Bulgarian Embassy Kiril Dimitrov said that Bulgaria’s independence is a symbol of the immeasurable strength of Bulgarian spirit, especially when Bulgarians are united by a common national cause. "That was the main driving force for the rulers at the time, especially for Prime Minister Alexander Malinov - a Bessarabian Bulgarian and one of our most outstanding statesmen after the Liberation. He made a significant contribution to the declaration of Bulgaria's Independence, displaying exceptional statesmanship, political foresight and a high degree of patriotism at such a complex historical moment," Dimitrov recalled.

Students from the Vassil Levski Bulgarian Theoretical Lyceum in Chisinau performed a musical and literary program.

The attendees honoured the memory of those who fell for the freedom of Bulgaria with a moment of silence.
