Bulgarian art will be exhibited in the gallery of the Bulgarian Cultural Institute (BCI) in Paris from September 21 to November 10, the BCI told BTA on Monday. The new BCI season will be opened with an “Outside the box 2” exhibition featuring 60 works by self-taught artists which will also be displayed in Sofia in 2024.

The authors of the featured works are part of the art brut creative movement, which is interested in self-taught artists working outside the established art scene, the Institute explained.

The exhibition will present over 60 paintings, sculptures and carvings by five Bulgarian artists: Borislava Marcheva, Demetrius Staykov, Simeon Shopov, Stanimir Enchev and Ivan Krastev.

"This is currently the only Bulgarian initiative of its kind, which attempts to systematize information about non-systemic contemporary Bulgarian artists who can be attributed to the "art brut" movement, still little known to the Bulgarian public," BCI added.
“Outside the box” is an initiative under the Bulgarian Art Brut project, which aims to collect, summarize and popularize information about Bulgarian artists from marginalized social groups with a strong focus on art created by people with mental disorders and illnesses, as artist part of the art brut movement.
