"We are not weakening our defensive capabilities, but something more. When we give away our old but serviceable weapons, we replace them with new weapons", said Justice Minister Atanas Slavov on Friday, referring to the military aid to Ukraine. He added that it is also good for the Bulgarian army to renew the reserves and not to lose them "literally after 2-3 years because they have become unfit".
Slavov expressed his belief that Bulgaria has a direct interest in this military aid. In his words, what is important is that a "country that is fighting for its freedom and independence and wants to be part of the free world receives the necessary support".
The Minister reiterated Zelenskyy's words that Bulgarian capacity to provide military assistance is not small, but the situation in Ukraine requires much, much more.
"Bulgaria, with its significant military-industrial complex, with the reserves it has had for decades in the Bulgarian army, can provide such assistance and we should," he added.
