2026 is the year in which the war between Russia and Ukraine has caused the most serious security problems for Romania, Romanian news outlet Digi24 reported. Over the past eight months, 25 drones have entered Romanian airspace, accounting for more than half of the total number recorded since the beginning of the war, the outlet said, citing information from Romania’s Ministry of National Defence. The Ministry maintains a real-time record of such incidents on its website, with the data updated daily.

Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, 130 attacks have been recorded in the vicinity of Romania’s border. In the first eight months of 2026 alone, 64 attacks were reported – more than twice as many as 2025, when 28 were recorded. As a result, the number of missions to safeguard Romania’s airspace has also increased.

Fighter jets have been scrambled 84 times since the beginning of the war, with 49 of those instances occurring in 2026. The operations have involved both Romanian Air Force aircraft and allied fighter jets stationed in Romania to carry out similar missions.

As for drones shot down over Romanian territory, 2026 marks the first time Romania has downed such aircraft, with four drones brought down in total. At the same time, numerous incidents have been recorded in which drone wreckage or crashed drones were found on Romanian soil. A total of 69 fragments have been recovered, 33 of them in 2026.

Another issue highlighted by the Ministry of National Defence concerns naval mines. During the war, the Romanian Navy has destroyed nine sea mines. Two such devices have been neutralized in 2026.
