Emerging from a meeting with Azerbaijan’s President, Ilham Aliyev, here on Wednesday, Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov told reporters that diversifying electricity and natural gas sources is becoming increasingly important. Zhelyazkov is visiting the United States to attend the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.

The Bulgarian Prime Minister said that he had discussed with Aliyev green energy supplies from Azerbaijan. In Zhelyazkov’s words, the idea of constructing an energy transmission cable under the Black Sea - passing through Georgia, Armenia, and Turkiye - is becoming increasingly realistic.

Zhelyazkov also spoke of the potential to increase natural gas supplies from Azerbaijan, noting that regional cooperation, including with Bulgaria’s neighbouring countries, could position Bulgaria as "a key corridor."

"That is precisely why we are placing special focus on building the necessary infrastructure," he said.

Zhelyazkov also expressed satisfaction with "our country’s excellent relations with Azerbaijan."
