Romania and Bulgaria have finalized a joint Black Sea maritime security centre project, Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Toiu said in Luxembourg on Monday. The centre will operate from Constanta and Varna.

Toiu said its main goal would be to strengthen the region’s joint risk analysis capabilities and help protect critical maritime infrastructure.

In October last year, Toiu presented Romania’s proposal to host a maritime security centre to her European counterparts. President Nicusor Dan has also repeatedly backed the plan. In early January, the European Commission said it supported setting up such a centre in Romania.

Last week, at the South-East European Cooperation Process (SEECP) summit in Sofia, President Iliana Iotova also confirmed that Bulgaria and Romania were jointly developing plans to establish a Black Sea maritime security centre.
