site.btaUPDATED Foreign Ministry Forms Crisis Task Force on Middle East Escalation
The Foreign Ministry issued a statement Saturday regarding the situation in the Middle East. "Our main priority is the safety of Bulgarian citizens. Today, the United States and Israel have launched full-scale military actions against the regime in Iran," it reads.
"Bulgaria has repeatedly expressed its concern regarding Iran's nuclear programme, as well as Tehran's missile programme, whose range could reach Europe. We have also repeatedly voiced concern about Iran's destructive role in the region. It is precisely in this context that we are deeply worried about the military escalation in the area. Our main priority is the security of Bulgarian citizens. In coordination with our partners, we have begun exchanging views and information regarding risks to European citizens, with priority given to those of the Republic of Bulgaria. A crisis team has been formed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs," the statement continues.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to closely monitor the situation, urging Bulgarian citizens in the region to maintain contact with Bulgarian diplomatic and consular missions and to register in the "I Travel For" portal on the Ministry's website.
In connection with the ongoing military escalation between Israel and Iran, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria is monitoring the situation around the clock, its press centre said earlier on Saturday. On the instructions of caretaker Foreign Minister Nadezhda Neynsky, a crisis task force has been formed. The Ministry is maintaining constant contact with all Bulgarian diplomatic missions in the region, as well as with its partners and allies, the statement said.
Given the escalating military actions in the Middle East region, the risk level for all countries in the region and Iran is currently at level 5, associated with a warning to suspend all travel and leave the country immediately, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on its website. These countries are Iran, Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Palestine.
