Decisions to achieve peace in Ukraine must be based on the fundamental principles of the UN Charter, such as sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, said Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev during an informal video conference of EU foreign ministers dedicated to Russian military aggression against Ukraine on Wednesday as announced by the Ministry's press centre.
At the beginning of the meeting, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha reported on the progress of negotiations on the US peace plan and the next steps and thanked the EU and its member states for their support. The ministers then discussed the latest developments, the support for US efforts and the EU's role and interests in achieving lasting, just and comprehensive peace in Ukraine. They also discussed ways to support Ukraine and maintain sanctions pressure on Russia. According to Georgiev, in order to achieve lasting solutions, the participation and consent of Ukraine, the EU, and its Member States is necessary on issues that concern them. At the same time, the Minister added, overall support for Ukraine and pressure on Russia must continue.
Earlier in the day, at a press conference following the online meeting of European foreign ministers, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said that the first step towards achieving peace in Ukraine must be an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.
