Europe's new car sales rebounded in July 2025 on strong demand for battery electric and plug-in hybrid cars, the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) reported on Thursday.
Car registrations in the EU advanced 7.4% year-on-year in July, offsetting June's 7.3% decrease.
The year-on-year variation in July 2025 showed a rise of 39.1% for battery-electric and 14.3% for hybrid-electric cars, while plug-in-hybrid electric recorded its fifth consecutive month of continuous strong growth with a 56.9% increase.
There was a 12.0% decline for petrol and 15.2% drop for diesel car sales.
Bulgaria, too, reported an increase in new car registrations for July. The share of battery-electric cars reached 5.8%, of hybrid-electric 3.5%, and of plug-in-hybrid electric 1.4%. Petrol cars accounted for the largest proportion of newly registered vehicles, 81.7%, followed by diesel-powered ones, 7.7%. The 4,706 new cars sold in the country in July 2025 were 20.5% more numerous than the number of sales a year earlier. At 272, the sales of battery-electric and hybrid-electric cars showed a 77.8% year-on-year growth. Plug-in-hybrid electric sales increased, too, to 64 or 56.1% up from July 2024. Hybrid-electric car sales rose by an ever larger margin, 104 to 166%. A larger number of conventional-fuel type car were sold, too: 3,843 petrol (up 15.8%, year on year) and 361 diesel (up 16.5%), the ACEA data show.
In the year-to-date period, EU car registrations dropped 0.7% from the like period of 2024.
Between January and July 2025, the battery-electric car market share stood at 15.6%. Hybrid-electric car registrations captured 34.7% of the market and remained the preferred choice among EU consumers.
Meanwhile, the combined market share of petrol and diesel cars declined to 37.7% from 47.9% over the same period in 2024.
