site.btaEnergy Minister Stankov Opens EU’s Largest Local Battery Storage

Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov inaugurated the EU’s largest local power-storage facility in Lovech, the Energy Ministry press service said on Thursday. 

The site offers almost 500 megawatt-hours of capacity—enough to meet the area’s demand—and is the first step towards 10,000 MWh of operational batteries nationwide within a year, Stankov said.

“The installation, built from 111 battery containers near Lovech, will help keep Bulgaria's energy system the most stable in the region,” Stankov said.

Such storage secures the grid and keeps household and business prices stable, providing affordable energy, Stankov said.

He recalled that legislative changes five years ago enabled Bulgaria’s first licensed closed electricity distribution area and showed that cooperation between the State and business delivers robust energy projects.

The aim now is to cut bureaucracy, create jobs and attract investment, he said.
