“The development of cultural heritage is a key element of the vision to establish our country as a destination not only for holidays, but also for spiritual enrichment, cultural experience and historical knowledge.” Culture Minister Marian Bachev said on Thursday at the opening of the first conference “Development of Cultural Tourism in Bulgaria” in Sofia.
According to him, cultural heritage requires coordinated efforts between the state, municipalities, cultural institutions and the tourism sector. Minister Bachev noted that the Ministry of Culture actively works in this direction and supports the activities of Bulgarian archaeologists, finances field studies and projects for conservation and restoration of immovable cultural property. This year funds will also be allocated for such activities.
"We believe that preserving our cultural heritage is also a strategic priority for the country's overall economy. Equally important is their modern, attractive display so that cultural heritage is alive, accessible and engaging for visitors and local communities," said Minister Bachev.
He noted that in 2026 the country will have a national cultural calendar. Procedures are already underway and it is expected to be approved by the Council of Ministers in the middle of the year. According to him, this is a strategic instrument that will ensure long-term predictability in terms of upcoming events and its usefulness for cultural institutions and event organizers, as well as for the Ministry of Tourism, local authorities and municipalities.
“We are confident that this will increase interest in various sites and events, which in turn will lead to benefits for the districts and municipalities in which they are held,” Marian Bachev further explained.
