site.btaGERB Leader Borissov: Economic Growth Should Be Basis for Redistributing Funds

Economic growth should be the basis for redistributing funds, rather than an increase in public debt, GERB leader Boyko Borissov said at a briefing at the Albena resort complex. Borissov attended the “New Minds” training session with young people from the party's local structures.

Speaking to reporters, Borissov criticized the Government's financial policy and said that the State should support people who produce, businesses, and entrepreneurs.

“When the economy grows, you can then redistribute money in the right way,” Borissov said, commenting on increased spending and government borrowing.

Borisov said that GERB should return to the policies the party had pursued during previous periods in government. He stressed the need to limit public spending and warned of the risk of a debt spiral if the current approach to borrowing continues.

“The rule is: ‘Spend as much as you earn,’” Borisov said, outlining the principle he believes GERB should follow.

According to him, in recent years political forces have focused on promises to distribute funds without paying sufficient attention to the people and companies that create economic value. He said GERB should defend the interests of small, medium-sized, and large businesses and create conditions for people with ideas and aspirations to become entrepreneurs.

Asked about the Government's measures to address the fuel crisis, Borisov said that he did not share the Government's approach. In his view, the measures should target people who produce and businesses, rather than policies based on distributing funds through government borrowing. 

Borissov also said that his party should combine the experience of its established members with the preparation of new faces. He said young members should be trained so that they can represent GERB's positions in the media in the future.

The briefing also addressed the construction of the Black Sea Motorway. Borisov said he would support an option in which a private investor finances the construction and operates the motorway for a certain period, with the road used through a toll system. According to him, such a project would benefit the region and would not directly burden the state budget with construction costs.

Borissov also stressed the need to develop industrial zones, which are planned for Varna and Dobrich. According to him, the development of industrial infrastructure is part of the approach to supporting entrepreneurship and economic growth.
