The Fifth Triennial of Fiber Art in Hangzhou officially opened on September 23, 2025, in the capital of Zhejiang Province under the theme “Re-Constellations.” Among its curators is Bulgarian artist Assadour Markarov, a lecturer in the Department of Fiber Art at the China Academy of Art, the Consulate General of Bulgaria in Shanghai said.
The exhibition features 45 artists from 17 countries, including Bulgarian artist Gergana Tabakova, who is presenting her work “Moving Horizons.”
During the opening ceremony, the President of the China Academy of Art, Yu Xuhong, praised the longstanding ties between Bulgaria and China in the field of textile art, which span nearly 40 years. He recalled that around 1985, Bulgarian artist Marin Varbanov opened a new chapter in the Academy’s experimental art practices. Under his leadership, the Varbanov Textile Art Research Centre was established in 1986.
The Consulate further said that in 1989, the centre was officially recognized by the Ministry of Culture of China as the country’s first institution dedicated to education and creativity in textile art. In 2003, the centre merged with the Academy’s Department of Sculpture, forming the Fiber and Space Art Studio.
