site.btaNGOs Discuss Systematic Approach to Early Childhood Development
NGOs involved in supporting children aged 0 to 3 discussed the systematic approach to early childhood development in a webinar organized by For Our Children Foundation and UNICEF Bulgaria here on Friday.
Trendafil Meterev of the foundation said early childhood is a period that has a significant impact on personality development and has a long-term effect on a person's life. The child's brain plasticity allows early intervention to have most significant benefits for the child's development. According to him, stunted development in the early years leads to lower educational achievement, reduced economic activity and productivity in adulthood, as well as to higher health and social protection costs.
The systematic approach to early childhood development includes coordinated efforts within the healthcare system. Those efforts are aimed at improving monitoring and early detection of developmental delays, as well as establishing mechanisms for guiding such children to community-based early intervention services. The ultimate objective is to provide quality, family-centered services and support for a smooth transition to inclusive early education and care.
Vania Kaneva of UNICEF said that developing early intervention programmes at the university level is very important. Steps have been taken in this direction with the Medical University of Varna. Experience shows that early childhood specialists are very difficult to find in Bulgaria, she noted.
Meterev added that a participatory forum focused on early childhood intervention is planned to take place in December or January.
