The 14th Wheat Bread Festival opened in Strazhitsa on Friday, celebrating Bulgarian bread-making, folklore and traditions through Sunday, the organizers from the Strazhitsa Municipality said.

Held at the town market, the festival honours bread and is inspired by The Tale of the Bread, written by renowned Bulgarian author Angel Karaliychev, who was born in Strazhitsa. The programme includes fire dances, live music, culinary competitions, bread-making masterclasses, games and a puppet show for children.

Saturday’s highlights include the traditional Proshtapulnik ritual, awards for the best homemade bread and a performance by singer Mona.
