The Eighth International Violin Competition "Vasco Abadjiev" begins Thursday at the National School of Music. Organized by the Club UNESCO "Leonardo da Vinci" in Sofia, it will culminate in a gala concert featuring the winners on the evening of November 23. 

This year's competition is setting a record, with 32 applications received from 14 countries, including Italy, Romania, Germany, Russia, Denmark, Israel, Poland, South Korea, Japan and China, all of which are known for their strong musical traditions according to the organizers of the event.

The international jury consists of Prof. Janna Gandelman (Israel), Prof. Ksenia Milas (Italy), Joanna Kamenarska (Germany), Giovanni Angeleri (Italy), Prof. Yosif Radionov and composer Stefan Iliev.

The first prize is EUR 3,000, and there are also special awards for a young performer, a virtuoso performance and a sponsor's award.

The competition pays tribute to celebrated Bulgarian violinist Vasco Abadjiev (1926-1978).
