Sofia Theatre has recognized five plays in its eighth open competition for a contemporary Bulgarian play, said the theatre’s director and jury chair Iriney Konstantinov. The results were presented at a press conference at the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), which is a media partner of the theatre.
The play “Love and Other Accidents” by Lyubomira Videva and Aleksandra Slavova took first place and will be directed by Ovanes Torosyan. Its premiere is scheduled for February 2026.
The other plays are include “Roman Night” by Nedyalko Delchev, “The Cry of the Funny Man” by Svetoslav Nikolov, “A Free Day in Pompeii” by Milena Varbanova, and “The Glass Child” by Yoana Dimitrova.
“We are continuing a tradition here by announcing the results of the competition for writing a contemporary Bulgarian play,” said Kiril Valchev, Director General of BTA. “The fact that this competition has been held eight times already, and that some of the winning plays have had a long life on stage, is a good example of continuity and tradition in Bulgaria,” he added.
The event also featured Olya Stoyanova, playwright and jury member of the competition; Zornitsa Kamenova, theatre scholar and jury member; and Ovanes Torosyan, director and jury member. The awarded plays were selected from a total of 81 entries.
