Sredets Borough Mayor Traicho Traikov wrote in his Facebook page on Friday that he has issued an official order to the administration of the National Assembly to take measures regarding the poor condition of the Parliament building at 2 Narodno Sabranie Square.

Traikov reported that some of the problems impacting the building include crumbling plaster, cracked walls, a plinth with intense moisture stains, defective joints around the granite facing slabs, crumbling friezes, and rusty water leaking from the decorative metal fence. The Mayor expressed hope that the new National Assembly Chair, Raya Nazaryan, will take the issues to heart.

In response to a query from BTA, the administration of the 51st National Assembly said in September that the design assignment for the preparation of an investment project for the major renovation and restoration of the old building of National Assembly is expected to be submitted for approval to the National Institute of Immovable Cultural Heritage by the end of the year.

On September 1, 2023, parliamentary sittings were moved to the new plenary hall in the former Party House, which used to serve as the headquarters of the Bulgarian Communist Party during the communist regime. The chair of the 49th National Assembly, Rosen Zhelyazkov, reported that the old building needed major repairs to address roof leaks, problems with the chillers, the heating, and the sewage system.
