Bulgaria is considering the possibility of including age verification as part of its national digital identity wallet, Minister of e-Government Valentin Mundrov said during the EU Council on Transport, Telecommunications and Energy in Horsens, Denmark, the e-Government Ministry said in a press release on Friday. Bulgaria also supports the European Commission’s proposal for a common EU-wide technological solution that could be implemented by all Member States.

"The idea is to ensure a secure and privacy-protected way to verify users’ age when accessing online services - especially for children and young people. This will provide additional protection against inappropriate content and high-risk online platforms while safeguarding personal data," Mundrov said.

The main topic of the forum was the Jutland Declaration on building a safe online world for minors, initiated by the Danish Presidency of the EU Council. The document focuses on risks such as harmful content, addictive algorithms, and the excessive collection of minors’ personal data.

"Children and young people are among the most active digital users but also the most vulnerable. Age verification through the digital wallet could be part of a balanced solution, one that protects users without creating barriers. We support the European Commission’s efforts to establish a coordinated EU approach to this issue," Mundrov said.

On Wednesday, the Bulgarian government approved Bulgaria's participation in the Jutland Declaration.
