Protesters gathered in front of the Interior Ministry building in Sofia on Thursday, demanding the resignation of Interior Minister Daniel Mitov. The demonstration, organized by the BOEC civic movement, led to the blockade of the central streets in front of the building.
“Our demand is also connected to the case in which four individuals were detained following an alleged assault on the Director of the Regional Directorate of the Interior Ministry in Ruse Nikolay Kozhuharov,” BOEC leader Georgi Georgiev said. “We are calling for the release of the boys from custody,” he added. Georgiev announced that BOEC members will stage another protest on Friday in front of the Veliko Tarnovo Appellate Court.
Georgiev stated that the case in Ruse is a disgrace and an attempt to protect a police chief. He added that the lives of four young Bulgarian men are at stake.
Nikolay Denkov, Co-Floor Leader of the Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria parliamentary group, also attended the protest.
Demonstrators chanted “Resignation!” and carried signs with slogans such as “Interior Ministry = Mafia”.
A separate protest was also held Thursday evening in front of the Palace of Justice in Ruse. Protesters there also demanded the release of the four young men arrested in connection with the incident involving Kozhuharov, as well as his resignation. Among their demands is for acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov to intervene and have the case transferred outside of Ruse for greater impartiality.
