On Tuesday, Rumen Hristov, Chair of the Union of Democratic Forces (UDF), part of the GERB-UDF coalition, commented on September 9 – the 81st anniversary of the communist coup in Bulgaria, carried out with the support of the Red Army. In a statement published on Facebook, Hristov described the date as a “black day for Bulgaria”, arguing that it led to killings, the confiscation of property and land from tens of thousands of Bulgarians, the suppression of freedom of speech, bans on religious faith, and attempts to turn individuals into a faceless mass without independent opinion.

He further stressed that after this day, Bulgaria was forcibly removed for half a century from the free European world. He also reminded that the country was compelled to pay hundreds of millions of leva to cover the maintenance costs of the so-called “liberating” Soviet army during its occupation.
