Minister of Justice Georgi Georgiev participated in a ceremony marking the 140th anniversary of the Unification of the Principality of Bulgaria with Eastern Rumelia, which took place in front of the ossuary of Prince Alexander I Battenberg in Sofia.

“September 6 is a lesson for everyone, a lesson that in far more difficult times our ancestors managed to overcome their political differences and interpersonal conflicts in the name of a common ideal,” said Georgiev. “That is why today, 140 years after one of the most heroic dates in our history, despite the Great Powers and despite the agreements and messages from abroad that it was not the right time for the Unification, our ancestors showed that when the time is not right, we Bulgarians create our own time,” he added.

“This is the lesson that we must all learn today, not to draw dividing lines greater than the one that separated Eastern Rumelia from the Principality of Bulgaria. This does not mean that we have to agree on everything, but rather that we should debate, defend our differences, but have a common ideal, and that ideal is a strong and prosperous Bulgaria,” Minister Georgiev added.

With a minute of silence and the laying of wreaths at the tomb of Prince Alexander I Battenberg in the capital, 140 years since the Unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia were commemorated. The ceremony was attended by the mayor of Sofia, Vasil Terziev, members of Parliament, and guests.
