The wildfire in Sungurlare Municipality (Southeast Bulgaria), which destroyed hundreds of hectares of mixed forests and vineyards, has been brought under control, Sungurlare Mayor Dimitar Gavazov said on Monday. Several firefighting teams remain on site and are continuing to extinguish the fire, he added.

The necessary equipment, including aircraft, is available. At present, the firefighting teams are focusing their efforts on two fronts in the forest area.

By order of the Mayor, a state of emergency was declared in the territories of the town of Sungurlare, the villages of Beronovo, Skala, Slavyantsi, and the settlement of Balabanchevo for an indefinite period. It remains in force.

Work to completely extinguish the fire continues for the fourth day. The flames broke out on Friday, covering a large area of forest and vineyards.

"We worked late into the night. There are still active hotspots, and we are continuing to extinguish the fire today. Our goal is to stop the spread of the fire - at the moment, there is no danger to populated areas. Last night, a decision was made to use one helicopter and two planes today," Gavazov said.
