The Haskovo Regional Environment and Water Inspectorate (REWI) has undertaken an urgent inspection of the Maritsa 3 Thermal Power Plant (TPP) in Dimitrovgrad after a sharp increase in the sulfur dioxide values recorded by the Rakovski measuring station, the REWI said on Thursday.
An on-site inspection was immediately carried out at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the facility, during which over 426 micrograms per cubic metre of sulfur dioxide was measured in the town's atmospheric air. The operator of the TPP was notified to urgently take effective measures to reduce the leak of sulfur dioxide. The actions taken by the operator after the inspection led to a sharp decrease in sulfur dioxide values to about 22 micrograms per cubic metre.
The REWI noted that the threshold for sulfur dioxide in Dimitrovgrad has not been exceeded for three consecutive hours so far in 2025.
