A court has ordered a Bulgarian citizen to be held on bail on charges of illegally transporting gold and currency worth over BGN 1.5 million at the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint, the Haskovo District Prosecutor's Office said on Thursday.

The man, who is 50 years old, was arrested on July 29 on the exit route of the Bulgarian customs checkpoint towards Turkiye. During a search of the car, USD 740,000 and EUR 30,000 were found in a bag on the back seat. When examining the driver's handbag, customs inspectors found packages with a total of 1,288 g of 24-carat gold.

This amount of gold and the undeclared money were seized. Pre-trial proceedings have been initiated in the case.
