Acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov and the President of the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB), Plamen Dimitrov, signed a Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation on Tuesday, the Prosecutor’s Office said in a press release. The memorandum aims to protect civil rights, including the rights of workers and employees, and builds on the existing cooperation between the two institutions.

The partnership between the Prosecutor’s Office and CITUB ensures employees’ access to justice and the possibility of fair, timely, and effective legal protection in cases of violations of their rights as enshrined in national and international legal acts and standards, including the Conventions of the International Labour Organization.

The two institutions will continue to work together on developing and implementing mechanisms for submitting and reviewing reports of violations related to trade union rights, non-payment of wages and social security contributions, breaches of occupational health and safety regulations, discriminatory practices affecting labour rights, and restrictions on trade unions’ access to workplaces. Joint awareness campaigns are also planned.

A joint working group of the Prosecutor’s Office and CITUB will discuss legislation and judicial practice, as well as exchange views and proposals to improve the investigation of offences affecting workers' rights.
