The Association of European Journalists – Bulgaria (AEJ-Bulgaria) joined the largest journalists’ organization in Europe, the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), AEJ reported on Friday.
The organization’s application was unanimously approved at the EFJ Steering Committee’s meeting on Wednesday.
The EFJ represents over 296,000 journalists across 74 journalist organizations in 44 countries. The Federation advocates for the social and professional rights of journalists working in all media sectors, supporting unions and associations throughout Europe.
According to AEJ-Bulgaria Board Member Maria Cheresheva, Bulgarian journalists operate in a hostile environment with limited financial resources and under constant political and economic pressure. “The increasing attacks on democratic principles globally further worsen conditions for quality and independent journalism in Bulgaria. Our decision to join the EFJ is part of AEJ’s ongoing efforts to offer effective support and solidarity at the European level for the Bulgarian journalistic community,” she said
AEJ-Bulgaria is a professional community of journalists, part of the Association of European Journalists, and an independent observer at the Council of Europe. Currently, AEJ has over 175 members from across Bulgaria, including international correspondents.
