At its regular meeting on Wednesday, the government approved an update to the National Euro Changeover Plan of the Republic of Bulgaria, the Council of Ministers said in a press release.
The aim of the amendments is to adapt the text to new developments and the progress made in the technical preparations for the introduction of the euro in Bulgaria. The updates relate to the revision of the indicative target date for euro area membership, January 1, 2026, as well as the adjustment of the necessary timeframes in line with this new date. The changes are in accordance with the update to Council of Ministers Decree No. 168/2015, adopted on June 18, 2025, which concerns the establishment of the Coordination Council for the Preparation of the Republic of Bulgaria for Euro Area Membership, and with the special convergence reports, in which the European Commission and the European Central Bank confirmed that Bulgaria meets all criteria for joining the euro area as of January 1, 2026.
The amendments were drafted by the Coordination Council, which is co-chaired by the Finance Minister of Finance and the Bulgarian National Bank Governor.
The National Euro Changeover Plan serves as a management tool for organizing the introduction of the euro, outlining the main areas and activities to be undertaken, as well as the coordination between institutions throughout the process.
