Addressing a news briefing on the cabinet’s governance programme implementation on Wednesday, Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov said that Bulgaria had clearly outlined its priority to strengthen national defence within the framework of NATO’s collective defence and the European Union’s Common Security and Defence Policy. Deputy Prime Ministers Tomislav Donchev, Grozdan Karadjov and Atanas Zafirov also attended the event.
Zhelyazkov said that strengthening NATO’s collective defence can be achieved through the development of an effective system for recruiting, selecting, and retaining military personnel, alongside the accelerated rearmament and modernization of all branches of the armed forces.
Zhelyazkov also emphasized the importance of cyber defence, highlighting its role in countering disinformation and ensuring effective strategic communication with the public. A dedicated structure within the Defence Ministry has been designated to support this effort.
The PM underscored the government’s targeted and strategic efforts to stimulate, develop, expand, and modernize Bulgaria’s defence industry, including partnerships with key international allies. "We are working to strengthen NATO’s defence capabilities in the Black Sea region," Zhelyazkov said, recalling Bulgaria’s proposal for establishing a defence coordination centre in Varna.
