Education Minister Krasimir Valchev announced Tuesday on Facebook that he will initiate legislative changes, which will limit the powers of mayors to declare non-school days.
School classes have been cancelled in Sofia on Wednesday, because of protests of staff in the city’s public transport, Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev said earlier in the day at a press conference.
On May 14 at 4 a.m. a protest will be held by public transport staff with demands for decent pay.
The Mayor of Sofia said that earlier on Tuesday he had spoken with the heads of the Sofia Bus Transport and Electric Transport, who had assured him that if there is no escalation of Wednesday's protests, they are ready to go out and do their jobs. “Our concern is that depots can be blocked and this could lead to an inability to work,” Terziev added. He said that the municipal administration understands and respects the fair right to protest, but hopes that it will take place without excesses and tensions so that the people of Sofia do not suffer.
