Nearly half a tonne of paddlefish was released into the Tundzha River in Yambol's Central Park to enrich biodiversity, the local government said on Wednesday.
Paddlefish is a non-predatory freshwater species, reaching up to two metres in length. It feeds primarily on plankton through filter feeding and contributes to the natural regulation of algae in aquatic ecosystems. The species helps to improve the ecological balance in closed and low-flow water bodies as is the water feature in Yambol's Central Park.
Mayor Valentin Revanski himself paid for the purchase of the fish.
The local government in Yambol regularly stocks fish in the Tundzha River. At the end of 2024, one tonne of carp was released into the river arm in the Central Park. There is an year-round ban on fishing in the water feature in Yambol.
